Top Five Batman Nicknames

This week's Top Five List is the Top Five Nicknames for Batman!!

Just missing the list, due to a technicality, is "Dynamic Duo," as it is not really a nickname FOR Batman, but rather, for Batman AND Robin.

5. Bats

This nickname is down on the list, because it is less refined nickname, used more as a way to tease Batman. If you are not in the Justice League, you should not refer to Batman as Bats.

4. World's Greatest Detective

This is fairly low, because, well, let's be honest...who's to say that it is even TRUE? As fellow blogmate, Sean Whitmore, so aptly made reference to awhile back, nowadays, it often seems as though Batman's investigatoty skills rarely vary beyond beating up hoods to get information.

3. Masked Manhunter

I have not even really heard this one that often, but it does at least apply to Batman.

2. Caped Crusader

Here's a fun game, find out the last time that a Batman comic actually referred to him as a caped crusader!!!

1. Dark Knight (and the derivitive, Dark Knight Detective)

This is the clear winner, as Batman even has a comic NAMED "Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight," and "The Dark Knight Returns."

Great nickname, isn't it?

Have I actually missed any good nicknames?

My favorite, though Ra's al Ghul is the only guy who's allowed to use it, is the simple "Detective."

Me too. That should edge "Bats" off the list.

Doesn't Batman have a few "official" nicknames that never quite caught on? Superman's actually got a bunch of those that hardly ever get used - "Action Ace" and "Metropolis Marvel" being just two.

Back in the '70s, Denny O'Neil used to always introduce Bats on the splash page as "The Darknight Detective" or "The Dread Batman".

Fleischer's Encyclopedia lists a bunch of alternate nicks, including The Black Knight, The Caped Crime-Buster, and The Masked Manhunter.

Did the Joker once refer to him as "Ol' Pointy-Ears"? Maybe that was on the cartoon series and not the comics, but I certainly remember one of Batman's villains refering to him with that nickname.

Gordon's pet vigilante springs to mind.

And I think he has been called the "Gotham Guardian" more than one time, though the details escape me. It could have been marketing material.

And more than the Joker has called Bats by the name of Pointy Ears. That was a JLI staple, though I think only the late, lamented Blue Beetle and Maxwell Lord used it.

replying to the comment that unless your in the justice league you shouldn't call him "bats",Selina (Kyle) aka catwoman does it all the time. and I think some of the bat family has done it to. so add surrogate crime fighting family and girlfriends/lovers to that list.

Ya, if you aren't seeing him use his detective skills, you are reading the wrong comic lines, or none at all I suppose.
