Which 6/28 Comic Books Were You Free of Snark For?

Which comic books that came out this week did you have absolutely zero snark for?

For me, it would have to be Daredevil #86. I thought this latest issue of Ed Brubaker's Daredevil was almost letter perfect.

How about you folks?

Cover Challenge!

New gimmick!

You know the old gimmick that they used to have in DC Comics where they'd let an artist draw a cover and then the creative team would have to come up with a story to match the cover?

I now offer the challenge to you folks out there! I will post a cover, and you come up with a story idea to match the cover! Sound cool? Let's begin!

Top-Five Bat-Gimmicks

Today's top five examines the coolest of Batman's bat-related gimmicks.

5. Bat Signal

This is ranked this low mainly because it's not REALLY "his" gimmick. That being said, it's a major part of the Bat mythos, so it deserved a place on the list.

4. Batarang

The Batarang is one of the oldest of Batman's gimmicks (1939). Anyone know who invented it? Finger? Fox? Kane, perhaps?

And what a cool gimmick it is!

3. Batmobile

The Batmobile is such a staple of the Batman culture, isn't it?

And rightfully so!

2. Batplane

The Batmobile is cool and all, but nothing beats a bat-shaped plane!

1. Bat Shark Repellent

How awesome is Batman that he even has developed a special spray to repel SHARKS!

You go, Batman!!!

Agree, disagree? Let me know!

Who takes this one?

I presume both are excellent at Stratego. But who is that much better?

New Comic Day Unique?

I understand that other industries also have specific days when their new products come out (CDs, DVDs, etc.)...but is there another industry that has anything similar to the comic book industry's "New COmic Book Day," where the day is almost treated as a mid-day holiday?

I think new DVDs (Tuesday) is probably the closest, at, say, a Blockbuster. People showing up to rent the newest releases. But even that is not exactly the same.

Is there a better comparison that I am missing?

Who Is It? for 6/24

Remember, who is it and what clue gave it away!

1. This creator got his/her start as an artist during the 70s.

2. This creator became a writer almost exclusively during the 70s.

3. This creator is male.

4. This creator got his writing start working for Warren comics.

5. This creator recently signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics.

What 6/21 Comic Book Week Books Did You Have No Snark For?

Which books from this comic book week did you have absolutely zero snark for?

For me, it is a close match between All Star Superman #4 and Casanova #1. Both books without ANY snark from me!

How about you folks?

How good do you think Marvel has been with the Pro and Anti-Registration picks?

I think they've done a DECENT job, although I would differ with a few.

To wit, The Shroud. Why would The Shroud be Pro-Registration? Spider-Man gives a huge speech to Congress AGAINST registration, but then he supports it? Would the Thing really have a position either way?

How's about y'all give me five heroes who have not yet appeared in Civil War, and tell me what side you think they would be on.

I will begin!

USAgent - Pro (duh)
War Machine - Pro (Rhodey seems to trust the government, even though it was hunting him down at one point)
Gravity - Pro (He's young enough to trust authority implicitly)
Hawkeye - Anti (I don't see Clint trusting the government enough)
Free Spirit - Pro (She SO would trust the government enough)

Your turn now!

Top Five Galactus Heralds

Who are the top five heralds of Galactus?

5. Firelord

What puts Firelord above most of the heralds is that Firelord was involved in one of the silliest fights in the history of comic books, the Firelord/Spider-Man battle that somehow ended with Spider-Man beating Firelord. This is the Snark Free blog, or else I'd have more words to say.

Also, Firelord was in Jurgens' Thor and he was cool there.

4. Terrax

Terrax is one of the better cosmic villains out there. He's powerful enough to be a threat, but not so powerful that, say, the New Warriors couldn't beat him.

Although, I donn't think he ever reached the level of a superstar in the Marvel Universe.

3. Nova

Nova was a good stalwart. I think she had the longest tenure out of ANY Galactus herald.

She was a good character. I never understood killing her.

2. Silver Surfer

Ol' Norrin just recently became Galactus' herald AGAIN, which was an interesting plot change.

Surfer is the class of the heralds, but I dunno, the other heralds did not complain as much. So that hurts Surfer. That leaves, as #1...

1. Aunt May

I think this speaks for itself, don't you?

Agree? Disagree? Let me know!

Monday Challenge - Aquaman vs. Namor

We've seen how it played out in DC vs. Marvel, but obviously THAT's not all that accurate (unless anyone thinks Wolverine could actually beat up Lobo), so let me pose it you folks now - Aquaman vs. Namor in an all out brawl- who wins?

Nagging Thoughts for 6/18

As of Infinite Crisis, when did Black Canary join the Justice League?

Jason Todd died and was replaced by Tim Drake in the same year now, right?

Is that odd?

How old is Superman now?

Is Joe Chill still alive?

Did Bloodwynd get retcon-punched out of existence?

How old is Wonder Woman?

Who Is It? for 6/17

Remember, who is it and what clue gave it away!

1. This character is female.

2. This character first appeared on a cartoon show.

3. This character has a partner.

4. This character works for a bad guy.

5. This character has one of those "Fire and Ice" type name combo thing going on with her partner.

Best Crossover Spin-Off

Crossovers are known for being great places to spin titles out of the crossover, but most of them are quickly cancelled.

There are a few gems out there, though, including Starman and L.E.G.I.O.N.

What do you folks think is the best crossover spin-off?

Which comics from this week did you have NO snark for?

Which comes that were released this week did you have zero snark for? For me, I think it would be Supermarket #3 by Brian Wood and Kristian Donaldson. It was not, like, some amazing comic, but it kept a nice, even keel, with very interesting characters, good art, and a great end bit.

How about you folks?

The Grand Contradiction

I really like it when two superheroes hang out together as friends. However, at the same time, I am not really all that into Superman and Batman being bestest buddies.

I get that they are the two biggest heroes DC has, but why do they have to be such good friends?

I'd like to see the whole "good friend" thing mixed up a bit. I mean, Wonder Man and Beast - who saw THAT coming?! So I'd like to see some more mix-and-match friendships like that.

Take the X-Men, for instance. At times, it seems like some of the X-Men do not even know each other. Like, say, Bishop and Iceman. Have they even said ten words to each other in the fifteen years Bishop has been around? I am not saying I want Bishop and Iceman to become best friends, just that I'd like to see a little mixing and matching with superheroes hanging out, not just the old stalwarts (Atom/Hawkman, Green Arrow/Green Lantern, Superman/Batman).

If you had to make up a Suicide Squad...

what members would you choose?

The limit is 5 members (not counting whoever you leave behind)! The minimum is 4 members! Only living members!

I would choose:

Bronze Tiger
Deadshot
Vixen
Captain Cold
Eddie Feyers

Monday Challenge - Wonder Woman vs. Batman

If Wonder Woman was powerless, how long would she last in hand-to-hand combat with Batman?

Sunday, June 11, 2006

Who is the coolest precursor name hero/heroine?

You know them - they're the heroes and heroines who occupied names that were later made famous by other superheroes and heroines.

My question is - who was the coolest precursor hero/heroine?

My pick?

Starfire!

The dude was a Russian teen superhero!

How awesome is THAT?

More awesome than a hot alien lady!

have seen that Diana Prince has returned to the comic book, like during the late 60s when Wonder Woman went by "Diana Prince" and wore a white jumpsuit and fought crime as basically a secret agent.

So, what other weird points in comic book history would you like to see have a comeback in 2006?
