had the biggest improvement, origin-wise, over his Golden Age counterpart?

I'd say Atom. The Golden Age version is a short guy who gets trained by a bum who happens to be an ex-heavy weight champion.

The Silver-Age remake is a scientist who harnesses a white dwarf star and puts it into a belt so he can shrink down to sub-atomic sizes...

Hmm, I like the Golden Age Hawkman beter--but I like the Silver Age origin better.

However I don't know of any major superhero who has been retconned aa much as Hawkman.

Just what is his current origin?

The Flash, easily. The Atom was radically different but it was a radically different charcter. Jay Garrick on the other hand just breathed in some chemical fumes...Barry Allen had LIGHTNING HIT A SHELF FULL OF CHEMICALS ON TOP OF HIM!!!

Come on, no contest. Coolest secret origin of a superhero ever.
