September Splash! - Final Day

What better full page splash to end this even with than this page from Amazing Spider-Man #50.

This Romita splash might very well be the most famous full page splash in comic history.

And deservedly so.

"Classic" just about sums it up.

Hope you folks enjoyed all these full page splashes! I know I did!

September Splash! - Day Twenty-Nine

Today's full page splash comes to us from John Byrne's Fantastic Four, where Byrne does an amazing job of making us feel the drama of Galactus falling!

It is chilling.

September Splash! - Day Twenty-Eight

Today's full page splash comes to us from Avengers #118, which was drawn by the late, great Bob Brown.

The Avengers and the Defenders teaming up to beat up the bad guys?

Oh yeah!

September Splash! - Day Twenty-Seven

Today's full page splash comes from John Byrne's 20th Anniversary issue of the Fantastic Four, and is just a great reveal of what the Fantastic Four's situation is, exactly.

Very cool Doom moment.

September Splash! - Day Twenty-Six

Today's full page splash comes to us from Avengers #71, and may be the coolest drawing Sal Buscema ever did.

How cool is this?

It's my pal Rick's favorite Avengers team ever.

September Splash! - Day Twenty-Five

Today's full page splash is the climatic page from one of the most classic Spider-Man tales of all-time, the death of Gwen Stacy!

Watch out, Green Goblin!

What a great page by the late, great Gil Kane!

Sunday, September 24, 2006

September Splash! - Day Twenty-Four

Today's full page splash comes from an issue of Avengers drawn by Barry Windsor-Smith.

It is Thor and Goliath finding out what happens when you hit adamantium with all you've got!

It rocks, verily!

Saturday, September 23, 2006

September Splash! - Day Twenty- Three

Today's full page splash is courtesy of Iron Man #132, drawn by the underrated Jerry Bingham (although, clearly, Bob Layton's inks are a big part of this drawing).

It is Iron Man knocking Hulk out.

Woah.

And Michelinie and Layton were good enough to show us that this was a rare occasion that totally blew out Iron Man's armor!

September Splash! - Day Twenty-Two

Today's full page splash is courtest of Fantastic Four #72, and depicts the first (at least I think it is the first) awesome Silver Surfer splash page in comic history!

Go Jack Kirby!!

Thursday, September 21, 2006

September Splash! - Day Twenty-One

Today's full page splash comes from Amazing Spider-Man #238, the first appearance of the Hobgoblin, who writer Roger Stern and artist John Romita, Jr. sure did a great job into making him a formidable foe during the 1980s.

Creepy!!

Wednesday, September 20, 2006

September Splash! - Day Twenty

Today's full page comes from Captain America #113, and I think I only need to say three words.

Jim Steranko rules.

Tuesday, September 19, 2006

September Splash! - Day Nineteen

Today's full page splash comes from Avengers #181, where the Avengers learn that the government is going to place some restrictions on the team. Crazy stuff, but it allows John Byrne to draw a ton of characters at once, which can often rock (he and Perez sure were good on the team books, weren't they?).

September Splash! - Day Eighteen

Today's splash page comes from Fantastic Four #73 - and you know what it is? It is Thor and Thing beating on each other.

What is better than that?

Sunday, September 17, 2006

September Splash! - Day Seventeen

Today's full page splash is a pretty powerful image from Amazing Spider-Man #400, as Aunt May dies as Peter recites a line from Peter Pan (Aunt May dying and the original Star Trek franchise ending - can that line from Peter Pan NOT go well with anything?).

Nice piece of writing by J.M. DeMatteis, and a good Bagley page.

Saturday, September 16, 2006

September Splash! - Day Sixteen

Today's splash page comes from the wedding of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, and it's so nifty, they even point out in the comic how neat it is for us to see this John Buscema group splash page!

Friday, September 15, 2006

September Splash! - Day Fifteen

Today's full page splash comes from the second "Peter Parker reveals his identity" issue of Amazing Spider-Man.

The way Peter gets out of it is not all that great, but man, did it give us a cool John Romita splash page or what?

Thursday, September 14, 2006

September Splash! - Day Fourteen

Today's full page splash comes from us from Avengers #144, which reveals Patsy Walker's new identity as Hellcat, showing Steve Englehart's amazing ability to salvage older characters!

And check out the pencils from a young George Perez!

Wednesday, September 13, 2006

September Splash! - Day Thirteen

Today's full page splash comes to us from an Fantastic Four issue late in Kirby's tenure on the title, showing the Thing impressively lifting a whole freakin' building all by his lonesome!!

Awesome, eh?

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

September Splash! - Day Twelve

The following McFarlane page from Amazing Spider-Man #300 shows the return of the classic costume, after Peter realized it was a bit creepy to still be wearing a costume that looks like the alien symbiote that just formed a villain who tried to kill him (and scared Mary Jane spitless).

So this was a nice return to the classic!

Monday, September 11, 2006

September Splash! - Day Eleven

Today's full page splash comes to us from earlier in the aforementioned Avengers' classic tale, "Even an Android can cry," from a scene by the amazing John Buscema showing the Avengers' roster through time.

What a great splash.

Sunday, September 10, 2006

September Splash! - Day Ten

Today's full page splash is courtesy of the King, Jack Kirby, who is so awesome that this splash wasn't even from the last PAGE of Fantastic Four #57!!

Nope, Doom sucking the Power Cosmic from Silver Surfer (who was trapped on Earth as punishment by Galactus) was in the MIDDLE of the comic!

What a stunning image.

Doom at his baddest.

September Splash! - Day Nine

Today's splash comes to us from Todd McFarlane.

I am not a huge Todd McFarlane fan and nor am I a huge Venom fan, but I will admit, this splash page from his first appearance is pretty darn well done.

Spider-Man was wearing the black costume at the time, so when a fellow in a black costume comes into the apartment, Mary Jane presumes it is Peter - she soon finds that she is wrong, with the result being this creeeeeeeeeeepy final page splash.

Friday, September 08, 2006

September Splash! - Day Eight

Today's splash is from later in the same issue that the previous Ron Garney Captain America splash came from.

In that page, Captain America was threatening Red Skull, but naturally, he didn't kill him, but that led to Skull trying to make another break for the Cube, leading to Cap actually cutting his arm off with the shield!!!!!

The cube exploded, leaving the following eerie (but cool) splash page.

Thursday, September 07, 2006

September Splash! - Day Seven

Today's full page splash is courtesy of Gil Kane (with strong - if not overpowering - inks by Jazzy John Romita), and comes from the Spider-Man storyline that ended with Captain Stacy being killed, which was a pretty darn major deal at the time (especially as it made Gwen hate Spider-Man).

Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus were having a pretty standard fight until Doc Ock sent Spidey flying off of a building, seemingly to his death!

Nice splash page.

September Splash! - Day Six

Today's full page splash comes from an issue of Fantastic Four where John Byrne was able to do his take on what would happen if the Fantastic Four had to fight Superman, as they faced off against Superman analogue, Gladiator, of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, who was on Earth hunting down some Skrulls (disguised as the X-Men).

Captain America and Spider-Man were thrown in for good measure (under the theory of "If a huge fight was happening in New York, wouldn't other New York heroes show up?"), resulting in quite a ruckus.

At the end of the giant battle, we get this great splash, which is totally made by Thing's wiseacre comment.

Tuesday, September 05, 2006

September Splash! - Day Five

Today's full splash page is the classic final page from the issue where Vision joins the Avengers.

The title of the story gives away the ending a bit, so I'll hold off on it, but to sum up the plot of Avengers #58, Vision was created by Ultron to destroy the Avengers, but he broke free of Ultron's control, and now the Avengers are considering making him a member.

Thor, Captain America and Iron Man come back to confer about it, and at the end, they decide to invite Vision to join the team. Vision is quite pleased about being accepted.

This leads to the beautiful John Buscema final page splash, which equals the title of the story - "Even an Android Can Cry."

September Splash! - Day Four

Today's splash comes from Amazing Spider-Man #252, which was both the first appearance of Spider-Man's black costume as well as the first issue of Ron Frenz's run on the title.

The issue details what went on while Spidey was missing during Secret Wars, and shows him adjusting to life back on Earth - with an alien costume, to boot!

Finally, though, when all is said and done, Spidey embraces his new costume and just embraces life, period, leading to this cool final page splash...

September Splash! - Day Three

Today's full page splash is a bit different, in that the coolness of the splash is not self-evident.

No, there is a little explaining to be done. The splash is the Fantastic Four staring agape at some big bad guy.

Well, the key here is that, last issue, Reed was working non-stop (hence the stubble) and they finally glimpsed the big bad - GALACTUS, EATER OF WORLDS!

That explains why this full page splash by Jack Kirby opening Fantastic Four #49 is so darn cool - our heroes, who are used to seeing some crazy stuff, are scared spitless.

Saturday, September 02, 2006

September Splash! - Day Two

Today's full page splash comes from Mark Waid's first arc on Captain America.

In the story, Cap is forced to team-up with his arch-enemy, the Red Skull, to stop Hitler, who is controlling a Cosmic Cube.

However, after foiling Hitler, the Red Skull takes control, and he messes with Cap but good.

So when Cap finally breaks free, well...he is none too pleased, leading to this striking Ron Garney-illustrated scene...

September Splash! - Day One

Today's splash is a classic.

Steve Ditko was a master of the multi-panel page. The amount of story he could pack into a single page - it was stunning.

So when Ditko went for big panels, you knew it was for something special.

Therefore, when Amazing Spider-Man #33 rolled around, we knew we were in for a treat.

The situation - Spider-Man is trapped under a bunch of rubble as the roof is about to collapse, drowning him in a deluge of water from the river. He has a serum to save his dying Aunt May, but he can't get to her because of the rubble. He is basically stuck, waiting to die.

But this is Spider-Man!!!

After seeing visions of his Uncle Ben urging him on, Spidey finally works his way through the pain, and we get the following classic full page splash (after a series of big panels)...

September Splash!

Here it is, September Splash! A month of full page splashes! Each day of September will feature a Full Page Splash from a Marvel Comic! Some of them are classic full page splashes. Some of them I just think look really cool!

Enjoy!!!
